Hi! My name is Bella Crespo. Throughout my high school experience I have been excited by the changing world and the part I play in it. After my trip to the Dominican Republic in 2019 I knew that I wanted to learn more about the people and the cultures that inhabit our planet.

What is The Global Studies Program?

The Global Studies Program at Watkinson School is a two-year class devoted to guiding students to become global citizens. Throughout the two years, students participate in a wide variety of events ranging from video calls with immigrants to attending a seminar about climate change. Students in Global Studies grow and evolve into citizens who care about not only their communities but also the communities and people around them. They learn how to adapt and create change in a growing and developing world.

I am a serious athlete. I dedicate many hours a week to biking and rock climbing. I race for team ERRACE which is a team based in Hartford, CT that raises money for cancer research. I also am a competitive rock climber for team Central Rock Gym in Glastonbury.

I am very passionate about changing the world. During my sophomore year of high school, I went on a service trip to the Dominican Republic. We set up medical clinics in the bateys and built houses for the sugar cane workers. This experience was truly eye-opening. It is one thing to hear and read about these situations of poverty and destitution, but to see it with your own eyes is a different experience. This trip made me realize there is so much more to the world than the little bubble I live in. This service trip was the main part of why I wanted to join Global Studies. I realized that I want to help people who cannot help themselves. I want to travel the world and do service while learning about different cultures.  I want to immerse myself in everything the world has to offer. Something else that I focus on is climate change.  I went vegetarian three years ago in an effort to cut my personal carbon emissions and reduce my impact on factory farming. I hope to help slow climate change and make a difference in our world.
